Meet the Producers -
Isle of Man Meats

For any newcomers, who are you and what do you do?

We’re Isle of Man Meats and we work closely with our superb Manx producers, butchers, and retailers to offer the finest 100% local beef, lamb and pork.

When did you establish your business?

We have been at the heart of meat production on the Island in various forms for over 80 years, but Isle of Man Meats was established in its current form in 2018. With a completely modernised meat plant and ever-closer relationships with the Manx farming community, we’re supplying the finest meats to the Isle of Man and the world beyond.

What inspired you to begin?

We have a passion for showcasing the pure provenance of the Island’s beef, lamb, and pork. Our Island is an amazing place – the world’s only entire nation UNESCO Biosphere region – and it’s a place of amazing produce. Our environment and agricultural heritage means we are uniquely positioned to create clean, fresh, world-class food products of all kinds. Preserving that environment, mitigating climate change and ensuring our food security will become increasingly vital to all of us. We believe the future is buying local, and that starts with supporting our agriculture and producers.

How has your business grown since then?

Since 2019, we’ve been ploughing our efforts into encouraging people across the Island to buy and support local, and to be mindful of the environmental impact of imported foods. It’s prompted folk to think more about food miles, along with the added benefits that buying local can bring to the Manx economy and community. As part of our drive to invest in the future of Manx food, we’ve also set up an NVQ butchery training scheme with support from M.E.A.T Ipswich, giving the next generation of Island butchers the opportunity to earn while they forge a career in the meat industry.

Where are you based and what does that community mean to you?

Our accredited meat plant is nestled in Tromode, but our reach extends across the Island. We work directly with over 200 farms and we’re proud to support our local agricultural industry. It’s a community that means everything to us, and we know the majority of our producers personally. It’s these close working relationships that allow us to deliver fresh products reared to the highest welfare standards to our Island’s people.

What does the Isle of Man Food & Drink Festival mean to you?

Simply put, there’s no better platform for showcasing all that is Manx. It’s all about the sheer variety on offer, telling the amazing story of farming and food production on the Island.

Which other local producer(s) are you most looking forward to seeing this year?

There’s just too many – and honestly, that’s utterly heartening to us! We love the diverse range of local products that are now available on the Island, and every single one of these businesses is essential for a vibrant Manx feel over this special weekend.

What’s on the horizon for your business?

Developing more on-Island sales is paramount. We’ll continue to develop consumers’ trust and recognition when they're out shopping, and will continue to enter our wonderfully cared-for products into notable award competitions both on and off Island.

What is your signature dish/product?

Don’t make us choose! It's so hard to pick a favourite between our locally grown and raised beef, lamb and pork – and we’ve certainly never tasted better. Fortunately, our chef Maciej “Magic” has a wonderful recipe for them all!
