Meet the Producers -
Isle of Man Creamery

For any newcomers, who are you and what do you do?

We are Isle of Man Creamery, a local cooperative of Manx dairy farmers, which produces milk, cheese, cream and butter, and runs a doorstep delivery service for the Isle of Man.

When did you establish your business?

The farmers cooperative was established in 1934 after Tynwald passed the Agriculture Marketing Act.

What inspired you to begin?

The key aim of setting up the Milk Marketing Association and subsequently Isle of Man Creamery, was to give all the Island’s dairy farmers a fair price for their milk to allow the economies of scale that come with a central processing hub.

How has your business grown since then?

Since the cooperative was formed, Isle of Man Creamery has gone from strength to strength. We have 30 dairy farmers who supply us with over 26million litres of fresh, Manx, grass-fed milk every year, which we turn into 9million litres of processed liquid milk, and 1800 tonnes of cheese which is sold on Island, and around the world in countries including Australia, USA, Spain, Malta and throughout Europe. We employ 85 members of staff at the Creamery and support approx. 400 jobs Island-wide.

Where are you based and what does that community mean to you?

We are based in Tromode at the central Creamery, and have been since the 1970’s. The community in which we operate means a lot to us as a business, we are keen supporters of a number of charities and events throughout the year, and enjoy getting out to meet our customers at shows, talks and school visits.

What does the Isle of Man Food & Drink Festival mean to you?

The Isle of Man Food & Drink Festival provides us with a great opportunity to interact with our customers face-to-face and talk to them about what makes our product different. We can also use the opportunity to showcase any new products we have in the pipeline and sample all the other amazing food and drink that’s produced on our little Island!

Which other local producer(s) are you most looking forward to seeing this year?

It’s always a joy for us to explore the show and meet all the food producers past and present. We’ll of course be looking forward to seeing our old friends from Noa Bakehouse who we partner with on our doorstep delivery rounds.

What’s on the horizon for your business?

We are always looking for new opportunities within the dairy sector which we will explore and look to develop. There is every chance you may be seeing a new flavoured cheese product later in the year…! We are also exploring new packaging options for all our product lines, which will help to improve our carbon footprint.

What is your signature dish/product?

Our flagship products are our Vintage Cheddar, and Vintage Red Leicester. Strong and crunchy with loads of flavour, they are always a firm favourite at all the shows!
